Making a Dog Coat, The Easy Way
Missed the seasonal sale on a coat for your do and the price has doubled due to inclement weather? Maybe you don’t want to drop serious cash on a dog coat? There are a host of reasons why some people don’t buy a dog coat. One of them is the age old question if your dog needs a winter coat.

Dog Sweater DIY
Well, we discovered that some dogs do need a winter coat when out walking in freezing temperatures or walking with you in the snow or rain. Creating a simple dog sweater that is easy to slip on your dog as well, protect them from the elements is made simple.
For a Smaller Dog Coat
- Grab an old sweater
- Cut off the sleeve
- Cut holes in the sleeve where your dog’s legs would be (be sure to remove the sleeve from the dog before you start cutting holes in the sleeve…)
- Trim any excess material and you’re done… easy peasy.
For larger dogs you’d think this might pose a problem, but… you simply use the chest portion of the sweater. You’re going to need to know how to sew (by hand or machine) for this step.
- Grab an old sweater
- Cut off the sleeves
- cut the chest area down the middle – so it looks like you now have an old blanket.
- You’ll need to sew a few buttons on either side of the sweater
- Sizing: You may also need to sew the sweater to ensure it’s a bit snug.
Majority of this is self-explanatory. If you can’t sew, but want to use one of your old comfy sweaters to make a dog coat, you can try asking your dry cleaner, most of them do sewing and tailor work. To get that one-of-a-kind look, DIY a dog coat!
