There isn’t a more handsome hound to represent our Dog of the Month than this guy! Congrats to our July 2024 Dog of the Month – Meet Gambit!

This handsome Redtick Coonhound isn’t just a looker, he has plenty of personality to boot!

What is your dog’s name?

Gambit

How did you pick his name?

We named all of our previous pups’ based on Marvel characters from the comics, so we had to continue the trend! Gambit is an X-Men character. The character itself has many different personality quirks – but we zeroed in on his curiosity often getting him into a bit of trouble. That and a happy coincidence is he has red eyes, much like most hounds, haha!

What breed is he?

American English Coonhound AKA Red Tick Coonhound.

Does he have any nicknames?

Mr. Gam, Gam Gam, G Wagon, GiGi, G, Big Boy, Flopsy, and Doofus.

What are his favorite places to be scratched?

Ears, hands down! If you scratch his ears, he will seek you out and love you for life.

What is he most afraid of?

Rain. Not thunder, not lightning just RAIN.

If Gambit had a profession, what would it be?

Professional Food Critic – OR – Professional Competition Eater.

If he drove a car, what would he drive?

Old school Cadillac – fits his vibe to a T.

If he could eat any human food, what would it be?

ALL of it – he is a hound after all! That powerful nose has made him fall in love with many yummy off-limits goodies.

Does Gambit prefer chicken or steak?

He doesn’t judge – he loves it all.

We love him when he visits us at DDG but let’s hear about what he is like behind closed doors…

Does he prefer his mom or is he a bigger fan of Dad?

Gambit is a mama’s boy 1,000,000%. He only loves dad when there’s food in his hand.

What’s the naughtiest thing Gambit has ever done?

While there is quite the list to go off of from his puppy days. Mr. Gam is most known for being a ninja when it comes to stealing large cooked meats.

He has mastered sneaking (even though he is quite large) so quietly and grabbing from counters without making even a sound he is wildly impressive. One time he took an entire ROAST without notice from WITHIN its pan. He brought it to the living room and munched on it without even notifying any of our other dogs.

Does he prefer the floor, the dog bed, the couch, or all of the above?

Anything soft or squishy he is not a floor sleeper.

Does he prefer a bone, ball, stuffy, or rope?

Gambit only likes 1 style of toy. The plastic-y spiky squeak balls/donut-shaped toys. If you give him one of those you will be his bestie for life. ***More specifically we have noticed he only plays with his pink or orange ones long term, the rest get abandoned.

Does he prefer a good snuggle or an energetic wrestling session?

If you are not mom you have to have food and then he will allow ear scratches or you can simply admire him from afar. If mom, SNUGGLES – all day every day.

Does he prefer a walk or a swim?

If he could choose to swim in the ocean every day he would. He likes walks, but often tells us it’s time to go home early.

What’s your favorite thing to do with Gambit?

Take him on cross-country road trips, particularly to the ocean. His first time at the beach he swam confidently out to a person who was doing laps (pretty far offshore) and just kept following him back and forth. He has always been at home near the ocean, never afraid of waves or anything like that.

Also (to our dismay) he loves to roll in the sand after getting soaked.

What does a day in the life of Gambit look like?

Hound Life = Eat, Sleep, Poop, Repeat.

What is one thing you would change about him?

That he could live forever.

What word or phrase do you say to him most often?

“FOOD?!” (in a high pitched voice), this is his favorite, but if you don’t have food when you say it, be prepared for side eye and silent treatment until you do.

“GAM GAM, wanna brush your teeth!?” we say this regarding dental chews and also actually brushing his teeth. He LOVES both.

“Place”, because he LOVES to bay out the window, at the door, at someone taking too long to distribute his dinner. This is used 100x a day to get him to chill and place on his bed.
